I don’t know if you caught SBS on Tuesday night…for the important disturbing program this week on Dateline, called ‘Allow me to die!’
SBS Europe Correspondent Brett Mason followed the journey of two people in Belgium, and he was actually present as one of them killed herself.
Brett Mason is on the line from Europe…..
Brett you set out to ask the question … has Belgium … which has the most liberal euthanasia laws in the world … got it right or gone to far?
How did you get involved in the story in the first place?
In Belgium - they are not just talking about people with terminal illness… and bringing forward in a sense the inevitable…. but actually sometimes perfectly healthy people….one woman grieving the death of her daughter….
You describe on your blog the day … a woman Simone kills herself….and you see the final moments of her life. She seemed nice, and in the footage you showed, not particularly miserable….. but wanted to die.
Moore Theological College’s Lionel Windsor, what were your impressions when you were watching the program? Individual Choice vs role of the state? Protecting people from the consequences of their own decisions?
