There’s been a controversy raging all this week on the Sydney Morning Herald letters page about the link between God and suffering and the question is God responsible for suffering?
It was sparked by a letter in the Herald from a Cooks Hill Man Dennis Biggins who was writing in about a Christmas Eve Opinion Piece from Simon Smart who works at the Centre for Public Christianity.
Dennis Biggins writes…
Simon Smart relates three moving stories of individuals thanking Christian belief for helping them to cope with adversity. Good for those people. Does Dr Smart have any explanation as to why the God whom they thank allowed the suffering which they endured, let alone all the other, immense suffering in the world that He allegedly created? - Dennis Biggins Cooks Hill
Well the letters pages erupted.
PAUL GRIMMOND is on the line. He wrote the book SUFFERING WELL. It’s subtitled… the Predictable Surprise of Christian suffering.
Paul’s part of the Chaplaincy Team at the UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES and involved in the Christian group there CAMPUS BIBLE STUDY.
Paul, Let me start with the question that started the debate….
Is there any explanation as to why the God whom Christians thank allowed the suffering which they endured, let alone all the other, immense suffering in the world that He allegedly created?
